Multimedia News and Sport Reporter

 

We are looking for a Reporter to join our News Team covering South Wales.

 

You will be the first on the scene of breaking stories across South Wales, delivering colourful, descriptive reports, gathering high-quality, engaging audio and being able to respond calmly and effectively under pressure.

 

You will have a strong voice that delivers radio reports with authority and you will also have the ear, eye and editing skills to create outstanding video reports too.

 

You will be expected to develop and maintain contacts with key decision makers and our local audiences, so we are the voice of our local community, delivering original and relevant stories with quality face-to-face audio / video. You will be the ambassador for our station and will have great people skills and contribute to a positive working environment.

 

News happens at any time of day or night, seven days a week so flexibility is expected in order to react to major stories outside of normal working hours.

 

This is a predominantly remote-based position, ideally based in Cardiff. However you will have access to our studios in both Swansea and Bristol.

 

Responsibilities
 

  • To source, develop, create and deliver quality breaking local news stories to local news-hub and national news desks on an hourly and daily basis.
  • To have the organisational skills and news judgement to plan and deliver compelling locally relevant stories for breakfast bulletins, including quality, engaging local audio / video.
  • Upload all news stories you deliver on-air onto Bauer’s digital platforms i.e. on the news pages of our websites and on social media, in line with Bauer’s Social Media Policy.
  • Curate and maintain contacts with key people in your news area to help source news stories.
  • Maintain an effective diary of upcoming local newsworthy events.
  • Produce a weekly local prospects list and agree plans for coverage of events with the news desk.
  • Be able to react quickly and effectively to breaking news happening in your area.
  • Be able to deliver clear, concise and correct copy at speed.
  • Source and deliver exclusive stories into breakfast news bulletins.
  • Be available in the event of breaking stories or emergencies outside of normal working hours.
  • Ensure all your stories are legally sound, accurate, balanced and Ofcom compliant.
  • Edit and present bulletins for whatever services are required and/or report and cover other news roles where necessary to help the UK news team.
  • Be part of establishing well-rehearsed plans so we can react quickly and effectively to breaking stories and emergencies. 
  • Report and produce on location of major news stories as required.
  • Play your part in having a professional, calm and positive working environment. 
  • Work with other news teams within Bauer, including our magazine brands, to maximum effectiveness.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise time effectively.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Any other reasonable duties as delegated by the Head of News or News Editor in Chief.
  • You will for Health and Safety reasons ensure that the Newsdesk always knows your location and what you are doing.

 

What you will bring

 

  • Recognised Broadcast Journalist Qualification
  • Fully conversant with media law and Ofcom Broadcast Code
  • Sound knowledge of current affairs
  • General knowledge of Sports news
  • Skilled in all social media including Twitter, Facebook, recording video and audio for online purposes.
  • Full UK Driving Licence and the ability and confidence to be able to drive Bauer pool cars.

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of broadcast area
  • Contacts in broadcast area or patch.
  • Prior knowledge of Bauer’s newsgathering software / technology
