Digital Social Journalist

Reporting to the UK Digital Editor, you’ll play a key role in shaping how our journalism connects with audiences across social media. 

 

You’ll be part of a fast-moving newsroom environment where creativity, accuracy and speed matter. Working closely with the Digital News Editor and wider UK news team, you’ll help bring stories to life through compelling social-first storytelling.

Your role:

As our Digital Social Journalist, you will identify compelling stories from across our UK news operation and turn them into engaging, shareable content tailored for social platforms. 

 

This is a hands-on creative and editorial role. You’ll be responsible for producing and editing video content, repurposing journalism into social-first formats, and reacting quickly to the news agenda. 

 

You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment and be confident turning complex news stories into clear, visually engaging content in either video, image or text formats which will work on our socials. 

 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Produce and edit engaging social video content from our UK news output 
  • Identify stories with strong social potential and adapt them for digital audiences 
  • Repurpose content for relevant platforms and brands 
  • React quickly to breaking news and deliver content to tight deadlines 
  • Create original social-first journalism with viral potential 
  • Monitor social media channels and audience interaction 
  • Analyse social media performance alongside the Digital News Editor 
  • Ensure all content meets legal, copyright and ethical standards 

 

The skills you will bring: 

  • Recognised Journalism qualification 
  • Strong understanding of media law and the Ofcom Broadcast Code 
  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of social media 
  • Proven ability to produce and edit video, images and audio content for online platforms 
  • Strong editorial judgement and attention to detail 
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-moving news environment 
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills 
  • Deep understanding of social media trends and audience behaviour 
  • Confident working across multiple platforms 
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours when required 

Desirable: 

  • Familiarity with Adobe products, particularly Premiere Pro and Photoshop 
  • Previous experience of a website CMS 
  • Knowledge of social media aggregation tools 
  • Happy to appear in front of the camera for videos 

 

Working Pattern / Location:

In office/remote or hybrid working. Some flexibility required, including out-of-hours work in response to out-of-hours news or breaking news.
