Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Streaming/AWS)

Contract type: Full‑time, Permanent

Location: Remote – candidate must be UK‑based
Working pattern: Home Worker (with occasional in‑person meet‑ups in London)

Our Team: How we enrich everyday life

You’ll be joining SharpStream – Bauer’s audio streaming specialists – a small, high‑performing team building and operating a market‑leading distribution network for live and on‑demand audio. We support global broadcasters and podcasters by delivering billions of listening hours each year.

You’ll work closely with a passionate team of engineers, infrastructure specialists, and customer success partners who collaborate tightly, share knowledge openly, and are united by a mission to deliver audio reliably to millions of listeners worldwide.

The Difference You Will Make

In this role, you will be at the heart of the technology powering Bauer’s audio streaming ecosystem, helping to evolve platforms that broadcasters depend on every day. You’ll contribute to systems that deliver content at scale, shape the future of our audio recording and compliance tools, and take ownership of products used both internally and by our customers.

Your work will directly influence how publishers deliver, monetise, and analyse their audio – and you’ll have the autonomy to drive meaningful technical decisions as our systems grow and mature.

A standout candidate is someone who has experience with broadcast or streaming media technologies. This could include audio or video streaming, live or on-demand systems, or tooling such as Liquidsoap, Icecast, FFmpeg, or similar pipelines. We’re especially interested in experience working with encoding, transcoding, metadata, and media workflows at scale.

Your Role

You’ll play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining the applications and infrastructure that power SharpStream’s streaming and content management platforms.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Building and improving backend services using PHP/Laravel.
  • Migrating projects from on-prem environments to AWS native workflows.
  • Designing performant, scalable database architecture.
  • Working on our streaming and media management products such as:
  • Audio Recording Technology – scaling core AWS-based systems.
  • TimbreCMS – an on‑demand audio management and streaming platform.
  • Portal – an API-driven stream management tool.
  • EdgeCP – a streaming infrastructure configuration and monitoring tool.
  • Ensuring high code quality through TDD, functional testing, and documentation.
  • Working closely with our Streaming Infrastructure and Customer Success teams.
  • Participating in architecture discussions and team‑wide decision making.
  • Contributing to frontend tasks when needed.

The Skills You Will Bring

Required:

  • Professional experience with PHP & Laravel, plus strong knowledge of SOLID/DRY principles.
  • Experience working in a stakeholder‑led environment with strong communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of database design, indexing, and performance optimisation.
  • Practical experience operating AWS production workloads (e.g., EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, EKS, SQS).
  • Solid understanding of Docker and containerisation across development and production.
  • Experience in media, broadcast, or streaming technologies (audio/video pipelines, encoding, metadata, Liquidsoap, Icecast, FFmpeg, or similar).
  • A pragmatic, delivery‑focused approach to problem solving.
  • Experience with unit testing, TDD, and functional testing.
  • Comfortable working with additional languages or lower‑level tooling when needed (e.g., Bash, Python).

Desired:

  • Experience with Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, and GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with Vue.js, Tailwind, Bootstrap, or Inertia for frontend work.
